Food for Hungry People: Our Handmaidens Group, under the leadership of Zoe McCallum, will conduct our on-going collection of canned goods and non-perishable items to be contributed regularly to the Emaeus House here in Garden City. During Great Lent, of course, the archdiocese asks us to focus our efforts in providing food for the hungry; however, we need to give alms always, not only during Great Lent. Please watch for the placement of the collection box in the parish hall. May God bless our community of the faithful as they support this very worthy ministry.
ABC House: The Handmaidens Groups will also conduct our on-going collection of diapers, formula, baby clothing, toys, and whatever else is needed by mothers of newborn infants. These will be contributed regularly to the ABC House here in Garden City, a most worthy support ministry for mothers finding themselves in crisis pregnancies. ABC House provides necessities as well as counseling and education for mothers who choose life for their unborn babies rather than abortion. The Orthodox position on abortion is clear: our own patron, St. Basil the Great, unequivocally referred to it as “murder” and a very grave sin. However, St. Basil and all other Orthodox commentators on the subject consistently teach that in addition to our opposing abortion, we need to do all we can to provide help for the mother and child. The tradition of providing orphanages is a long-standing one; St. Basil himself used his own funds to provide an orphanage. Our own St. Raphael started an orphanage as did St. John Maximovitch. The ABC House in Garden City is very much like the Treehouse in Wichita, a ministry of our St. George Cathedral women’s group. Three Hierarchs of Garden City is happy to be able to be part of this ministry. May it be blessed.
